What's the EVOLUTION RANCH Story?

What's the EVOLUTION RANCH Story?

Evolution Ranch began as a great idea my wife had. Upon learning about the true impact of traditional livestock farming, she had an epiphany about entomophagy (the act of eating insects). She said, “What about farming insects and eating them? Specifically crickets?”. It seemed kind of far out but also like an idea worth looking into. We both dove into researching the topics of micro-livestock, entomophagy, recipes, cricket farming and all things related to insects as a food source for humans.

THE BEGINNING

It wasn’t long before I had revamped our large garage/basement into a cricket rearing facility housing a few hundred thousand crickets at any given time. This went on for the better part of two years. I learned a lot as I navigated the learning curve of raising that many crickets. One thing I learned was, don’t let the crickets get in the house!

Though I was able to produce a significant amount of cricket powder every 7 weeks (the crickets typical life span), I could see that I would not be able to produce enough cricket powder to meet the demand of a small business.

So, I began looking into other sources of high quality cricket powder. I found a collective of farms in South East Asia that was just that. They treat their crickets the same way I would, feeding them high quality mixed grain and vegetables, chemical free. The biggest difference is that the crickets are native to South East Asia so they are able to be farmed in large open air facilities, unlike the indoor setup that has been adopted here in America, which I found out is quite energy intensive and expensive to maintain (for example the cricket rooms are kept at 88° and the incubation rooms at 90° not to mention all the ventilation, air filtering, freezers, and humidification that indoor cricket farming requires). The farms I import cricket powder from are approved by their local FDA, the crickets are processed in a USFDA registered facility and they’re GMP as well as GAP certified.

Currently

Evolution Ranch has evolved into an import channel for high quality cricket powder and whole dry roasted crickets that I flavor with organic ingredients at our commercial kitchen.

Looking toward the future I believe farming native species of insects, locally would be the most sustainable option for a culture wide incorporation of insects as a food source.

For now it is a goal of Evolution Ranch to get the conversation going about entomophagy and be an information resource regarding all things crickets. And of course to provide quality cricket powder and flavored crickets for purchase.
